  • Riverside Provides Prosthetic Leg to Florida Sandhill Crane
  • On Thursday September 4, 2003, "Chicken" the Florida Sandhill Crane received his proshtetic limb fabricated by Tom Whitehurst, CPO. The new leg is made of silicone and titanium. It was fitted with the help of veterinarian Dr. Craig Butler. The Mesker Park Zoo & Botanic Gardens notified Whitehurst of the crane's situation in mid July after an operative procedure to amputate the crane's non-healing wounded right leg. Upon Evaluation by Tom Whitehurst, together with the zoo veterinarians, they felt the crane was a good candidate for a prosthetic limb.
